Goose Creek Memorial HS is now an AVID National Demonstration School

On Tuesday, Goose Creek Memorial HS was award the achievement of becoming the first in Harris County to be an Avid National Demonstration School.

Currently, there are 7,000 schools and more than two million students strong according to AVID's website. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nonprofit that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach. We train 80,000 educators annually to close the opportunity gap, so they can prepare all students for college, careers, and life. When schools partner with AVID, they receive professional development, a suite of resources, and ongoing support to ensure a lasting impact that maximizes their return on investment. AVID is not “one more thing to do”—our work with schools aligns with their goals to accelerate and enhance the work that is already happening.
AVID provides more than just a training and a few classroom resources. AVID provides schools a direct line of support to regional teams, data tracking, planning guides, and self-assessments to help schools measure their success and refine their approach. AVID empowers schools to create change in a way that is sustainable, measured, and responsive to campus needs.
AVID offers a variety of classroom activities, lesson plans, professional learning videos, and timely articles that are relevant to students. These tools help educators implement and refine instructional practices. They also help educators provide the key academic and social supports students need to thrive. Schools can utilize the professional learning modules and materials for in-service training and can access all of these resources year-round.
According to the AVID website, the program starts in Elementary and ends in 12th grade. AVID is closing the opportunity gap in college graduation rates among diverse and underrepresented demographic groups. The AVID Effect is realized through the delivery of inquiry-based and student-centric instruction, which increases levels of effectiveness. AVID  teachers inspire students to take control over their own learning.
