CPS has taken into custody three children from an apartment in the Oak Forest area where a toddler was abused, and later died, at the hands of an uncle, authorities said.
The 3-year-old toddler died Sunday, days after he was hospitalized from injuries that led to a fractured jaw, brain swelling, and extensive bruising.
Melvin Omar Morales-Gomez has been charged with causing injury to a child and is being held in Harris County Jail.
The toddler was last staying at Rancho Verde Apartment, at 6000 West Sunforest, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a tweet on Monday.
He said CPS took into custody three other children at the apartment, a 10-month-old girl and two boys, 3 and 6.
The sheriff also said the boy’s family has not been very cooperative, that the mother is belived to be out of the country and her whereabouts are unknown. Investigators have no information on the father, he added.
He also said no relatives of the toddler were at the hospital when the little boy died.
"In his final days, as he fought for his life, only my
(Sheriff Office) team was at his side, offering caring watch and
support, as no family was there," Gonzalez said.
Authorities are seeking information on the whereabouts of
the child's parents as well as any other information that could help in
the case. Anyone with information should call the sheriff’s office
