Two Suspects Charged in Fatal Crash at 6500 South Freeway

William Delawrence Lewis, Jr.
Charges have been filed against two suspects arrested in a fatal crash at 6500 South Freeway (State Highway 288 South) about 11:20 a.m. on Saturday (June 19).

One suspect, William Delawrence Lewis (booking photo) (b/m, 19), is charged with failure to stop and render aid and racing causing death in the 178th State District Court.  The second suspect, Kelly Mac Kenzie Mattox (b/f, 20), is charged with racing causing death in the same court.  A booking photo of Lewis is attached to this news release.

The identity of the female victim is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant D. Rodriguez and Officer H. Nguyen reported:

According to a witness, a black Kia Stinger and a silver Dodge Challenger were racing on the freeway near the above address when the Kia failed to drive in a single lane, struck the Dodge and then the concrete barrier dividing the northbound lanes and the managed lanes.  Both persons in the Kia were ejected.  One of them, a female, was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Mattox, the driver, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition.

Lewis, the driver of the Dodge, was not injured.

Investigators learned that Lewis originally left the scene and came back later with family members.  He was subsequently charged with two felonies.  Mattox was charged with one felony.

The investigation is continuing.
