Four capybaras born at the Abilene Zoo

ABILENE TEXAS - The Abilene Zoo is proud to announce the birth of four capybaras on Wednesday, September 15. This is the first time the Abilene Zoo has had a capybara birth, and zoo staff is thrilled to welcome the new additions.

Animal Care Supervisor Ryan King says to make plans to visit the zoo and see the babies as soon as possible because capybaras grow fast; at birth each tipped the scales at almost three pounds, and are approximately eleven to thirteen inches in length.

“This is a healthy size for the pups. Come by soon and let them capy-ture your heart!” said King. Full-grown capybaras can weigh anywhere from seventy to one hundred fifty pounds.

Animal Care Staff are very pleased with how well the pups are doing. The pups are currently in their habitat with their parents, ready to meet zoo guests in the South America exhibit area of the zoo.
