Houston Fire Department Adds Additional Equipment for Active Attack Incidents

HOUSTON - The Houston Fire Department's EMS Division recently deployed Rescue Task Force Bags to Shift Commanders, District Chiefs and EMS Supervisors in the field. The RTF bags are to be carried in their vehicles in the event of an Active Attack/ Active Shooter Incident and will be used to treat, stabilize, and remove the injured in a rapid manner. 

"Our job as firefighters is always evolving. The tools necessary to respond to a new environment are also changing, with the ultimate goal being to narrow the timeline gap between injury, and when the first medical care is provided to the victim.  The RTF bag is the next progression of tools of the trade. Having the tools on hand and the training needed is essential to provide for the health and safety of Houstonians," said Sam Peña Houston Fire Chief. 

In addition to RTF bags, HFD members along with HPD recently delivered and took part in training to address the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to swiftly and effectively respond to and stop an active attack threat.  HFD was able to purchase two Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) kits thanks to a donation from the Firefighter Foundation of Houston and the Houston Professional Firefighters Association Charitable Foundation. The cost of each kit was $65,000.

Earlier this year the department deployed ballistic vests for firefighters to wear during calls that clearly have the potential for danger, such as domestic violence incidents, shootings, stabbings, etc.  The vests were paid for through a federal grant and general fund allocations approved by Mayor Sylvester Turner.

"It is a new reality that is contrary to how we’ve always viewed this honorable profession, but protective clothing must be compatible with the environment we work in. This is the next progression of tools of the trade. Wearing ballistic vests will become an industry best-practice, and this is something our Firefighters deserve for us to lead the charge in implementing," said Chief Peña.
