Quick Arrest of Two Suspects in Eighth District Shooting Investigation

NEW ORLEANS – The NOPD today (August 3, 2021) arrested Markez Jefferson (pictured at top, black male, DOB: 04-29-1999) and Nathan Saavedra (pictured at bottom, white male, DOB: 01-18-2001) in the ongoing investigation of an aggravated battery by shooting on August 1, 2021 at the intersection of Bourbon Street and Orleans Avenue that injured five people.

Through the investigation, which included the use of surveillance video captured by the Real-Time Crime Center, NOPD Eighth District detectives developed and positively identified Jefferson and Saavedra as suspects in this investigation. Jefferson was positively identified as a shooter in this incident.

Both subjects were arrested and detained in the St. Bernard Parish Jail, before being transferred to Orleans Parish earlier today. Jefferson was booked on five counts of attempted second-degree murder, while Saavedra was booked on one count of obstruction of justice.

Detectives are still seeking wanted suspect Kareem Carter in this investigation. Carter is wanted on charges of illegal carrying of a firearm by a convicted felon and obstruction of justice.

“I want to commend the officers who worked diligently to make an arrest related to the shooting that wounded five people in the Eighth District,” NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said. “This thoughtless act could have been a much larger tragedy had anyone been killed by the reckless actions of the accused individuals.”

Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to contact NOPD Eighth District detectives at 504-658-6080 or call anonymously to Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans at 504-822-1111 or toll-free 1-877-903-STOP.
