Maurice Smith of Fresno charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Evading in a Motor Vehicle

BAYTOWN - On January 4th at 3:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 4500 block of North SH-146 in reference to a possible intoxicated driver. Once in the area officers located the vehicle, a black Suburban, traveling over the Hartman Bridge. Officers observed the vehicle failing to stay in a single lane and nearly strike another vehicle. Officers attempted to conduct a stop of the vehicle, however, the driver, later identified as 36-year-old Maurice Smith of Fresno, ignored their lights and sirens, continuing south into LaPorte, nearly striking multiple vehicles before exiting the freeway and ultimately coming to a stop in the parking lot of a business in the 100 block of North  10TH Street, where he almost struck the fence around the business. Once the vehicle was stopped Mr. Smith threw what was later determined to be a whiskey bottle out of the window, shattering on the ground.  Mr. Smith ultimately exited the vehicle at which time he continued to show signs of extreme intoxication, at which time he was placed under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to the Baytown Jail where Mr. Smith was given a battery of tests to determine his level of intoxication. Mr. Smith was ultimately charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Evading in a Motor Vehicle through Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
